The Power of Aromatherapy in Romance

The sense of smell plays an important role in the physiological effects of mood and stress, as documented by research facilities such as Johns Hopkins and publications such as Scientia Pharmaceutica. With the month of “love” and Valentines Day upon us, I wanted to share with you a few essential oils that can be really great for facilitating greater connection in our relationships.

Aromatherapy works on our actual nervous system and hormone system by engaging with the sensors in our nose, referred to as the Olfactory nerve. Once lit up with scent, the Olfactory nerve signals to the emotional part of our brain, the Thalamus, which in turn talks to the hormone center of our brain: the Hypothalamus.

Our body responds hormonally and emotionally from there based on the signals and emotions elicited from the scent.

There are certain scents that are really great for igniting romance, connection and joy. Here are the top 10 essential oils and some diffuser blends you and partner might really enjoy over your next connection session this month.

Essential Oils are a wonderful tool for facilitating greater connection between partners

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang has been used as a natural aphrodesiac for thousands of years. The essential oils from the petals elicit relaxation, calm anxiousness and relax the mind. Stress and overwhelm are some of the biggest blocks for healthy connection. Ylang Ylang helps us release those stressors so we can come into the moment and be present with our partner.

Calm + Connection

2 drops Ylang Ylang
2 drops Siberian Fir
2 drops Wild Orange

Hawaiian Sandalwood

Sandalwood’s warm and woody aroma soothes the nervous system and promotes sensuality in men and women. It’s synthetic form is often used in colognes and perfumes for this very reason.

This natural version is so much more lush!

Combine it a spruce oil like Black Spruce or Douglas Fir and a light floral scent like Neroli or Geranium for an even more sensual scent.

Warm + Sensual Linen Spray

In a 16oz spray bottle, combine

-10 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood
-10 drops Geranium
-10 drops Black Spruce

Top off spray bottle with water. Spritz on linens before bed.

Passion Blend Massage

Essential oils such as Ginger and Cinnamon essential oil help to naturally boost testosterone in men. In women, Cinnamon essential oil can promote healthy progesterone levels, the hormone that effects lubrication.

The Passion Blend has both of these essential oils in it in addition to ancient aphrodesiac oils like Jasmine, Damania and Sandalwood.

The warming sensation of Ginger, Cinnamon and also the Cardamom oils in this blend promote healthy circulation and naturally stimulate regions where the blend is applied.

Sensual Massage

Pour 3 drops of Passion blend in Fractionated Coconut Oil or Sweet Almond Oil and take turn massaging mix into each other’s low backs (that’s where the nerves come from that talk to the genital region), neck and shoulders.
