BEST Natural Sunburn Remedy + Sunscreen | DIY Recipe

Our natural sunburn remedy and sunscreen picks for this year had to be on point! This recipe is simple to make, full of skin nourishing and anti-aging ingredients and absolutely lovely to rub into your sun soaked skin.

Evan and I are knee deep in Palm Desert California summer. It’s only our second one since our move in 2019 and the 118 F days are certainly an adjustment.

Admittedly, this year feels a little easier than last. I know to wake up with the sun and take my morning coffee at 5:30AM on the patio to get in a little fresh air and bird watching.

I try to hit the pavement for my morning walk by 8:30am, before the sun emblazons 100+ F temperatures onto its Coachella Valley residents. Evan and I really value time outside, to get natural light exposure. We find it really helps with our sleep, an absolute game changer in fact. And while I don’t mind a good morning sweat, I certainly do mind the ramifications of the summer sun on my skin.

SUN BURNS ACCELERATE AGING

Of course I’ve read hundreds of articles that threaten skin cancer with too much sun exposure. But I’ll admit, it’s not the fear of skin cancer that has me obsessed with natural skin protection, it’s the fear of aging my skin too rapidly!

Vain, I know. But I’m being honest.

There are many desert sun bunnies I see around Southern California who simply did not take the time to care for their sun exposed skin and it shows. You can see it in the tough, leathery tinged skin appearance.

After just 20 minute in the sun, my bare shoulders and chest start to exhibit redness without protection. Maybe you notice the same about your skin? After my first summer season last year, I started to notice the leathery texture developing on my shoulders!

I immediately starting researching natural skin renewal and natural skin protection. This research is what eventually led to our “go to” Summer Skin Spray that not only renews skin, but also acts as the MOST amazing natural sunburn remedy!

THE SUNBURN + ANTI-AGING SKIN REMEDY

Our Summer Skin Spray contains the top essential oils to soothe sunburn skin and promote skin renewal. It’s so easy to use and really cost effective to whip up once you have all the ingredients.

Another benefit of the Summer Skin Formula is that the ingredients are super diverse. You can use each one for a multitude of wellness goals.

HOW TO USE THE SUMMER SKIN SPRAY FOR SUNBURNED SKIN

If you come in from your outdoor summer adventure, a day on the lake, a few hours at the beach and you just know your skin is on its way to sunburn-city, immediately grab your Summer Skin Spray and apply generously.

Reapply after you’ve taken your shower as well. Repeat application as needed during the day. The most I’ve ever needed to apply was 5 times in a single day. I just felt like my skin was craving the spray. I woke up the next morning with zero traces of a sunburn!

HOW TO USE THE SUMMER SKIN SPRAY FOR SKIN PROTECTION

I am not a fan of sunscreen. I don’t like the ingredients and I don’t like the way it makes my skin feel. We have shopped around for a lot of “natural” sunscreens and every year I’m dissatisfied with them.

This is why I’ll reach for my Summer Skin Spray first, when I know I’m going to be in the sun for 20-40 minutes. Any more than 40 minutes and I’ll go ahead and reach for the sunscreen.

If it’s a day where we are out in the sun for an extended period of time, like when we go out on a hike or hang out on the beach, I’ll apply sunscreen when we first arrive and then refresh skin protection with the Summer Skin Spray periodically throughout the time in the sun.

PLAN FOR SKIN PROTECTION

ON THE GO

Evan and I have a bottle of the spray in our car, in case we find ourselves inspired to be out in the sun a little longer than expected. This way a little skin refreshment and protection application is always within arm’s reach.

IN YOUR BEACH BAG

Of course you’ll want to keep a bottle of your Summer Skin Spray in your beach bag. This way you can apply and reapply as needed when you’re lounging on the sand or at the pool.

BATHROOM COUNTERTOP

We keep another one in the bathroom, out on the countertop. This visual cue reminds us to apply the Summer Skin Spray after each shower in the summertime.

WHEN YOU NEED SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen is a tricky industry, full of “green washed” labels and toxic ingredients. There is some speculation that the ingredients of sunscreen actually lead to the development of skin cancer more so than actual sun exposure.

And while I don’t subscribe to that belief fully, I am certainly opposed to toxins in skin care of all kinds.

When shopping for a sunscreen I recommend doing a product screen on the Environmental Working Group: www.ewg.org. You can actually search specific products and see how they measure up in terms of toxicity.

For the past few years Evan and I have done sunscreen research to try a new brand. This year we landed on these two:

You’ll want to make sure your sunscreen contains no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, no dyes or artificial fragrances.

Additionally, be sure that the Zinc Oxide is listed as non-nano particles

These are the sunscreens that Evan and I chose this year, to accommodate our family’s needs. We invite you to checkout the ewg.org to find out how your favorite sunscreens add up and browse around for one that meets your family’s needs.

HOW TO MAKE THE SUMMER SKIN SPRAY

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Add 10 drops each to 2 oz. spray bottle
  • Top off with Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Shake before spraying on skin

HOW THE ESSENTIAL OILS WORK ON THE SKIN

Each essential oil works to support either skin nourishment, protection or regeneration.

LAVENDER

Lavender helps to calm and rehydrate sunburned skin. It’s excellent in the kitchen because it even handles light oven burns by taking the skin and minimizing scarring. Of course it also works to remedy sunburned skin too!

Lavender and pure coconut oil feels like an absolute luxury after being in the sun all day. Sometimes I’ll even apply this combination on my skin first, prior to the Summer Skin Spray.

YARROWPOM

This essential oil blend is MAGIC for the skin! It’s a combination of Pomegranate Oil, which isn’t an essential oil but rather a carrier oil, like coconut oil or olive oil. Pomegranate Oil is quite the skin nourishing oil because of its anti-inflammatory and collagen building capacity.

The Yarrow essential oil brings all of the anti-aging components as it works to revitalize skin, reduce appearance of sunspots, evens out uneven skin tone and works to regenerate sun- exposed skin! It’s the “anti-leather” ingredient in our Summer Skin Spray!

ROMAN CHAMOMILE

Roman Chamomile is made up of over 50% esters, the chemical constituent that has the capacity to soothe dry, sensitive skin. Sun exposure causes so much dryness, so it’s the perfect addition to our Summer Skin Spray.

Roman Chamomile is also a nice addition to any skin care regimen for those who struggle with eczema or psoriasis. Simply apply 1 or 2 drops to your coconut oil or body lotion before using the Summer Skin Spray.

PEPPERMINT

We had to include Peppermint in our Summer Skin Spray because of its AMAZING cooling effects! The Peppermint cools and refreshes skin and feels wonderful when hanging outside in the summer.
