Get the Summer Glow WITHOUT the Skin Damage!

I’m a Southern California girl, born and raised. We spent EVERY summer at the beach, by the pool, in flip flops, short shorts and with baby oil (cringe) on the skin and lemon juice in our hair. I truly shutter when I think of the damage that I voluntarily incited onto my skin. There are more then several occassions where I burned my skin so badly, I actually got sick the day after.

I simply didn’t know any better.

Now that I DO know better, I am diligent about taking care of my skin every single day.

And now that we live in sunny Palm Springs I am extra diligent about nourishing and repairing my skin. Here are three of my favorite Pre- and Post- Sun Exposure Rx recipes for the summer sun.

Yes, they are all safe for the little ones in your family to use too.

Recipes for Healthy Summer Skin Rx

Before you go outside

Recipe 1: Flowerwood Baster Blend

Helichrysm + Sandalwood oils have skin protecting properties. I also LOVE the smell of doTERRA’s Hawaiian Sandalwood as it smells like the beach!

I apply 2 drops each in my coconut oil (also skin protecting) and slather my sun exposed skin with the blend.

You can also make your own dropper bottle with this combo. Here’s the one we did:

In a 1 oz. dropper bottle, combine the following:
-50 drops Helichrysm
-50 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood
-50 drops Lavender (helps with redness)
-Add as much Fractionated Coconut Oil as you like for dilution (we did 50 drops)

Recipe 2: Immortelle Serum

The magical Immortelle blend has Helichrysm and Sandalwood already blended up in it! And instead of Lavender, which helps to take the redness out of skin, there is Rose oil in the blend. I’ll alternate between this serum blend and the Flowerwood Baster Blend above.

Also, if I’m in a hurry or if I’m already out the door and I realize I forgot to apply the serum, I simply reach for the Immortelle that is always in my purse and roll onto my skin neat. I love the smell and my skin is grateful for the protection. Immortelle is always in my purse because it doubles as a natural deoderant. It’s really one of our most used oils in the house.

Recipe 2: Immortelle Serum

In a 1 oz. dropper bottle, combine the following:
-90 drops Immortelle (about half the full 10mL roller bottle)
-90 drops Fractionated Coconut Oil
Drop a few drops per area of skin that’s going to be exposed to the sun. Rub in well. BONUS: you’ll smell AMAZING!

After sun skin care

Recipe 1: YarrowPOM Serum Slather

If you’ve been baking in the sun, YarrowPOM Serum is going to be your GO TO oil! I recommend the Serum because it’s loaded with skin nourishing oils (fatty oils, not just essential oils) AND essential oils that nourish and heal damaged skin cells and promote a healthy immune response, rather then a pro-inflammatory response.

The Pomegranate Seed oil is loaded with punicic acid, which supports the skin’s natural barrier. The Jojoba, Sunflower, Avocado, Grape Seed and Argan Kernel Oils increase hydration (MUCH needed after being in the sun!). This will help prevent the skin from looking like it’s aging too. The Pomegranate esters and Coffee Seed Extracts work together to help the skin rejuvenate and tone down the redness.

Recipe 2: Sun Kissed Skin Spray

This blend is one that I learned about years ago, and I still spray it on during my beach or pool sessions nowadays. It also works great as an after-sun spray in case you don’t have YarrowPOM Serum Slather.

In a 30 mL. spray bottle, combine:

-40-60 drops Myrrh
-50-60 drops Lavender
-50-60 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood
-50-60 drops Peppermint
-50-Top off with Fractionated Coconut Oil

This beautiful skin spray feels AMAZING and helps to protect and rejuvenate the skin.

What About Sunscreen?

In truth: I hate sunscreen. I try not to use it as often as possible. The chemicals in most of them cause my skin to itch and bubble up in some cases! Evan (the husband) is terribly skin sensitive, so we always reacts to sunscreen.

We try not to stay directly in the sun for more then 20 minutes per day. And if it’s more then then that, then we use Immortelle or the Sun Kissed Skin Spray ever 30 minutes.

HOWEVER, if it’s absolutely necessary (and I DO have those days), I will use one of the following sunscreens that has official SPF levels and everything:

-All Good Kid’s Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 (yep, it’s kids, but it’s good for adults too)

-Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen Lotion, Fragrance Free SPF 30

-Suntegrity Natural Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Sport SPF 30 : my step-mother uses this one, I just learned of it yesterday and bought my first bottle today. She’s VERY protective about her skin since she’s dealt with melanoma before and she LOVES this sunscreen.
